Lost and Found
Hollow footsteps, cloaked by night
Of sadness known through tortured sight;
The willow weeps for solitude
As Owl moans a gloomy interlude.
- Reflection in the glossy lake
“If I should die before I wake…”
A tear shatters the silent face
That seeks solace in this deserted place.
Wind whispers through the willow’s leaves,
And Owl, perched high, silently grieves.
The glow from city lights afar
Swallow whole a falling star.
A wish upon the trembling lips
For peace. A raven gently sips
The water near his honored guest,
But soon flies to his hidden nest.
Weary beneath the flowing cloak,
The traveler rests against an oak
And fights the lure of heavenly sleep
-”I pray the Lord my soul to keep…”
Forever lost, each journey taken
Plagues the mind; the nights awaken
Troubled visions, thoughts of yesterdays,
That seem like beacons – lives away.
Random comforts cannot ease this soul,
For knowledge takes its weary toll
‘Pon one who suffers with each breath,
Who slept once in peace, then awoke in death..
Sometimes loneliness can take its toll on a person and can sand you reeling into a world of a world like a wafer, ready to crumble and hollow. Some people are used to and actually quiet comfortable with this solitude.
At other times when someone is abandoned, they lose their sight of the meaning of life and their purpose of existence. Imagine living without hope, ambition, dream and expectation. I wrote this poem years back with the imagination of my loved one leaving me. Before you read the poem i request you to go through the poem again and connect it with the picture.
The meaning of the poem:
I call the footsteps hollow as they have no meaning. When you are excited for whatever reason, you jump, run, walk with a purpose. Every step is towards that anticipated moment of happiness. So hollow footsteps is a reflection of a journey without a destination.
The footsteps are cloaked by night is a means of expressing darkness in the heart as the darkness outside. Here i have throughout the poem expressed the inside of the person’s heart via elements on the outside. So darkness outside is about absence of light, knowledge, wisdom and hope in the person heart.
Of sadness known through tortured sight is about the tortured sight as the person has witnessed something which has tortured the person in his heart. Sadness radiating from the fact that the person feels helpless about the circumstance.
The willow weeps for solitude, in the bible, there are 2 trees mentioned in the garden of eden. The first being the tree of knowledge and the second being the tree of life. The willow here is metaphor for life, spirit as in the tree of life. The tree(spirit) cries for solitude from sadness. The heart of the person has had pain as a companion for too long and now seeks to free itself of the cursed friendship.
As owl moans a gloomy interlude, the owl again is singing a gloomy tone. It is again the outside reflection of what is truly transpiring in the persons heart. The person wants to moan for his loss but is devoid of the motivation to even do that due to the nature of his loss.
Reflection in the glossy lake, the REFLECTION is mentioned here because it is a symbol of something which is unreal but yet exists. The picture depicts the person having a reflection of a raven which is not possible and yet the truth is that his insides have become as black as the raven. That his loss has devoid him of his human thirst for love, power and knowledge.
If i should die before i wake, the person is so devastated that he is numb to the fear of death. This fact causes him sadness coupled with his loss. And that is why a tear shatters the silent face. I would like you to note here that the person is still feeling pain for not wanting to live which shows that he was once someone who loved life and living.
The person seeks solace from his pain and the deserted place is irrespective of the number of people around him. It is empty for him as he knows, shares and loves no one.
The wind whispering through the willows leaves is again about hope i guess. It is difficult for me to understand my work too sometimes . What i write with the flow is often devoid of reason from the mind.
The owl perched high silently grieves, is about god grieving the persons loss. Perched high as it is referring to god.
The glow from city light afar, swallows whole a falling star. The glow from city lights is a metaphor for people and the world. The star refers to the previous grandeur of the person. The star which is clear in the night disappears when falling eventually. So now that the person is broken and sad, no one knows him or cares about his emotions even though he was once renowned.
The next line is but obvious. The Raven here in the next refers to people who might stop by for there personal reasons and needs and gains. Those guests who eventually leave once their purpose is complete. It also refers to the nature of people of trying once or twice to help a loved one and then giving up quick. Oak is the tree of Knowledge and heavenly sleep is death.
I will also let the rest of the poem be. I hope everyone enjoyed the poem and the thought put behind each word.

magical ! i could feel each and every line of ur poem..
Thanks Naga..
AWESOME..!! Who has written it..??
I have.. I am the author. I put it here too.
And thanks of course.
there couldn have been a better way of expressing the pain of solitude… hats off to u
and where did u get the picture from????
I first found the picture on Google.. Associated with it. Mixed my feelings with the picture and tada…..!!… Poem.
I actually found your poem through the picture. This picture has meant a lot to me for many years and I am very glad you linked it with this piece. It is just as dark as some of my own poetry as we only see things as dark when they are true. The scary thing is when I found this picture as, well as currently, I looked just like that … aside from the perfect six-pack … and still have that haircut.
Thanks again

You’re a brilliant writer. I could feel every emotion with every word and every line. What you expressed solitude to be is the exact truth of the matter. I couldn’t have done it better.
How can I go about getting permission to use this text “LOST and FOUND” for a choral composition I’m working on? – That is – assuming you would grant me such permission.
