I have always felt that most of South Indian movies have a story line that is fresh and treatment which is out of the box.Be it Roja, Minnale(RHTDM), Alaipeyuthay(Saathiya) or even recent ones like Ghajini or Force(Kaaka Kaaka).I have believed that a good story needs to be re-told so that it reaches the larger audience.Thats how an art like motion picture or cinema works. So here we are the remake of one of my favourite south indian movies which I watched in my college life; Vinnaithandi Varuvaya.I have some of my friends who were completely bowled over by the movie be it for its unusually simplistic story or the melodious tunes of maestro Rehman.Ek Deewana Tha rests mainly on its credentials of being a remake of “V.V”.But alas few minutes into the movie and I realized this is all I can say about the movie!
Ek Deewana Tha is one of the most forgettable movies to come out in recent times. The Tamil version mainly worked big not only because of its story and direction but mainly because of its performances by lead actors Simbu and Trisha. This is what lacks in Ek Deewana Tha.The actors’ expressions and dialogue delivery just do not sync.Pratiek tries hard in each and every scene but with little success.Amy Jackson…well she can definitely give stalwarts like Uday Chopra, Jaccky Bhagnani and Mimoh Chakraborty a run for their money in terms of her performance.A few more performances like Ek Deewana Tha and she will be there; right beside them! My single question to the director Goutham Vasudev Menon (I appreciate him a lot!) “Why did u have to choose Pratiek and Amy for such a movie which depended a lot on performances..why not pick a known actor/actress who would be able to give far convincing performances??”.The direction is also a major let down.Only relief is the music and Rahman s vocals which keep coming up at regular intervals.
I would give 1 on 5 stars for Ek Deewana Tha, single star mainly because of the songs(esp Hossaana).Feeling shell shocked as how a movie like Vinnaithandi Varuvaya can be treated so badly.People who have seen it would remember 2 things in the movie which were truly heart touching; a.The gate scenes in which the hero keeps fidgeting with the trap 2.Climax of the movie.I am very sorry to say that none of the magic is present in this movie.Final verdict-stay at home this weekend and watch the Filmfare awards(i know some cliche stuff there but still better) and remember “Ek Movie Tha” which you were sensible enough to let it go!
