Once in a while there comes a movie which moves at a feverish pace but at the end of it you realize that what you saw for the past 2.5 hours was not a movie but an experience which you take back home. Barfi being Anurag Basu s brainchild is an absolute experience to the cine watchers. It leaves an impact which very few films manage to considering it being an almost silent movie.
Barfi(Murphy) is a deaf and mute happy-go lucky guy-next door in Darjeeling who manages to be in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people, thus inviting trouble upon himself. Movie tells us about his life story and his encounters with police inspector Saurabh Shukla and his love stories with Shruti(Illeana) and Jhilmil(Priyanka Chopra). Movie gets more and more interesting with the kidnapping plot but somewhere in between all of this Basu falters a bit but finally manages to reach the audience’s hearts by the end of the movie.
Ranbir Kapoor adds another performance to his list of Rockstar, Rocket Singh, Wake Up Sid and Rajneeti which truly stands out. Specially his scenes with Priyanka are too heart warming. Nominations and awards will surely flow in his kitty this year. Illeana plays her part well as the subdued house-wife. But I feel the biggest breakthrough performance comes from Priyanka Chopra. As Jhilmil she plays the role of an autist to perfection.Specially in the scene where she reunites with Barfi, she is absolutely fanatastic. Music by Pritam is pleasing to the ears with few catchy tracks.
Final word- If you are feeling tad bit angry with yourself about your short-comings Barfi is a perfect movie to watch this weekend. It will spur your emotions at regular intervals and makes you feel that you must be contented and happy with what you have and enjoy your life to the fullest. The only thing which I feel holds the film back is its length. With a bit more trimming it could have been an absolute classic. Nevertheless grab your tub of popcorn, switch off your mobiles and enjoy Barfi!
